Slot 2D Artist in iGaming — Draws the visuals for slot games: symbols, backgrounds, characters and bonus screens, then prepares them for animation in Spine and integration into the engine.

What the role involves

A slot looks simple on screen: five reels, a dozen symbols and a background. Behind it are weeks of an artist's work. Low and high symbols have to read on a phone, the wild and scatter have to stand out, and the theme (Egypt, fruit, Vikings, cowboys) mustn't blend in with a hundred similar games in the lobby. A 2D artist at a provider studio makes concepts and final art, slices assets into layers and animates them in Spine or hands them to an animator. Production speed, holding the style of a game series and experience generating drafts with AI are what's valued.

Responsibilities

  • Concepts and final art for symbols, backgrounds, characters and reel frames
  • Bonus, free spins, big win and intro screens
  • Slice assets into layers and prepare them for Spine, Unity or Cocos
  • Skeletal animation of symbols and winning combinations in Spine
  • Release promo art: banners, game icons, materials for operators
  • Work with the game designer and developers on readability and optimisation

How performance is measured

  • Game production deadlines met
  • Number of iterations before art approval
  • Asset weight and performance on mobile
  • Consistency with the style and the art director's requirements

Skills required

Professional skills

  • Illustration in cartoon, flat and semi-realistic styles
  • Spine 2D: skeletal animation, meshes, export
  • Preparing assets for game engines and atlases
  • Composition, colour and symbol readability on a mobile screen
  • AI concept generation: Midjourney, Stable Diffusion

Soft skills

  • Holding a style without constant art direction
  • Taking revisions calmly
  • Tidiness with source files

Languages: At studios with a Russian-speaking team, Russian or Ukrainian is enough. European providers (Evolution, Playtech, Light & Wonder) require English B1+.

How to break into the profession

From mobile game development, illustration and casual games. A portfolio in at least two styles is what decides it; slot experience is desirable, but many studios hire strong artists from other genres.

Working hours: Mon–Fri, most positions remote. Office and hybrid roles exist in Poland, Bulgaria, Latvia and Malta.

Market demand: Hiring comes from slot and instant game providers: from big names like Evolution, Pragmatic Play and Light & Wonder to small studios with Russian-speaking teams. Artists with Spine and mobile game experience are sought most.

FAQ

Do I need to animate to work as a slot artist?

At large studios art and animation are done by different people. Smaller ones more often look for an artist-animator, and Spine becomes a must.

Can I move into slots from mobile game development?

Yes, it's the most common path. Show symbols and backgrounds in your portfolio that read on a small screen, and knowledge of the asset preparation pipeline.

How much does a slot 2D artist earn?

A remote middle usually earns €1,600–2,400 a month; in Malta and Cyprus €2,700–3,700.
