What the role involves
A Champions League final or a top provider's new slot release means several times more requests to the platform within minutes, and every second of downtime turns into lost bets and player complaints. A DevOps engineer in iGaming makes sure that doesn't happen: runs Kubernetes clusters in the cloud and on bare metal, describes infrastructure in Terraform, builds CI/CD, sets up monitoring and is on call for incidents. On top of that come the industry specifics: regulators' requirements to keep data in-country, environments split across jurisdictions, and DDoS protection.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and develop infrastructure in AWS, GCP or on bare metal
- Deploy and run Kubernetes clusters and Helm charts
- Infrastructure as code: Terraform, Ansible
- Build CI/CD pipelines for development teams
- Monitoring, alerting and logging: Prometheus, Grafana, ELK
- On-call, incident analysis and post-mortems
- Prepare environments to meet regulators' requirements in different markets

Bonuses: Most of the income is base salary. On top there can be on-call pay, an annual bonus and stock options at product companies.
How to break into the profession
From system administration or backend development. Without 2–3 years of Kubernetes and cloud experience you're rarely hired for a middle role in iGaming; juniors are mostly hired by large platforms.
Working hours: Mon–Fri, with plenty of remote and hybrid roles in Warsaw, Tbilisi, Riga and Malta. There's almost always an on-call rota, usually paid separately.
Market demand: Hiring is constant: operators with their own platform (Betsson, Kaizen Gaming), B2B platforms (SOFTSWISS, EvenBet), game providers and betting platforms. Engineers with high-load, security and multi-region experience are especially valued.
