Briefly: probation in iGaming usually lasts three to six months, and you can be let go during it with almost no explanation. What's assessed isn't “diligence” but three things: how quickly you hit the role's numbers, how you cope with the 24/7 rhythm, and how far you can be trusted with players' money and data. Get the pass criteria in writing in your first week: that's your main safeguard.
The offer is signed, access granted, and your first call with the team is in the calendar. For the next few months you'll be assessed more closely than in the interview, just without direct questions. In gambling, probation is often faster and tougher than in regular IT: the product runs around the clock, most roles have measurable numbers, and companies are used to replacing people quickly if things don't work out. Let's look at how long it lasts in different markets, what exactly is assessed for each role, and how not to get cut over something nobody explained to you.
How long probation lasts in iGaming
The length depends on the country where the contract is signed, not where the team sits. General benchmarks for the industry's main markets:
- Malta. Six months by default. For technical, senior and managerial roles paid at least twice the minimum wage, the law allows up to a year, and such terms do appear in middle+ and lead contracts.
- Cyprus. Usually six months. Until probation ends, the company can part ways with an employee without paying severance, so extending the period by mutual agreement is a separate clause worth reading before you sign.
- Poland. A separate probationary contract is capped at three months. This is strictly limited by the labor code, so “let's extend it another quarter” there means a different type of contract, not an extension.
- B2B contract and remote work. Legally there may be no probation at all, but in practice it's replaced by a short notice period in the first months, sometimes a week instead of a month. That's the clause to look at.
If the offer specifies more than six months for a mid-level role, or probation at a reduced salary, that's a reason to ask questions before signing. We covered how to negotiate such terms in the article how to negotiate an offer in iGaming.
What's really being assessed
Managers rarely say it out loud, but the assessment almost always comes down to three parts.
- Hitting the role's numbers. For an affiliate manager, it's the first partners signed and traffic; for CRM, launched campaigns and their conversion; for support, response time and player ratings. Nobody expects you to hit target in month one, but they do expect a visible trajectory towards it.
- Working at the product's pace. Casinos and sportsbooks don't pause. They check how you handle peak weekends, big tournaments and a night-time incident: whether you raise the alarm in time and don't disappear when you're needed.
- Trust with money and data. In iGaming, almost every role touches player money, personal data or the bonus budget. One payout mistake, a leaked back-office screenshot or a bonus granted without sign-off ends probation faster than any missed KPI.
Criteria by role, and the money
Below are typical expectations by the end of probation and mid-level salary ranges in Malta and Cyprus from the SpinHire profession database. At decent companies, the salary during probation is the same as after it.
| Role | What's usually expected by the end of probation | Salary range in Malta and Cyprus, middle |
|---|---|---|
| Support Agent | Independent shifts, consistent player ratings, zero payout errors | €2100–2800 |
| KYC specialist | Document checks within the time target with no rejections from compliance | €2400–3200 |
| CRM manager | Own campaigns live, clear segments, a bonus cost report | €3200–4400 |
| Affiliate Manager | Partners signed and first deposits from their traffic | €3300–4500 |
| Media Buyer | Campaigns profitable at the target ROI on the allocated budget | €3200–4500 |
| AML officer | Handling alerts independently and escalating correctly | €3500–4800 |
| BI Analyst | Dashboards people actually use, and numbers that match finance | €3800–5200 |
| Backend developer | Tasks shipped to production without incidents, understanding of the wallet and payment flows | €4000–5500 |

Week one: get the criteria in writing
The most common reason for failing isn't a weak candidate; it's that the criteria only existed in the manager's head. In your first week, ask for a short conversation and ask four questions:
- What numbers or results do you want to see by the end of the first, third and final month of probation?
- Who else is involved in the assessment, and when is the mid-point review?
- Which mistakes in this role do you consider critical?
- What would need to happen for you to want to end probation early?
After the conversation, send a summary by email: “Have I understood correctly that by the end of the period you expect…”. It isn't bureaucracy; it's protection against finding out five months in that “we were expecting something else.”
The mistakes that most often get people cut
- Staying quiet about problems. A campaign isn't working, a partner isn't sending traffic, tickets are piling up, and your manager finds out from a report rather than from you. In an industry where everything is measured daily, silence reads as not understanding.
- Handling on your own what should be escalated. A suspicious withdrawal, a disputed bonus, a player complaint showing signs of addiction: these are processes with rules, and going rogue here is more dangerous than being slow.
- Gambling on your employer's product. Many companies explicitly forbid it in their internal rules, and where it isn't forbidden, it still looks bad.
- Confusing remote with flexible. Even remote roles have a time window tied to the market. Disappearing during peak hours on probation is the worst idea.
- Not asking for feedback. If three months have passed without a mid-point review, set one up yourself.
If you don't pass probation
It happens to strong people too: the manager changed, the market you were hired for was shut down, the company restructured the team. We covered such reasons in our article on layoffs in iGaming. What to do in practice:
- Clarify the grounds for termination and the notice period under your contract, and check that you've been paid for days worked and unused leave.
- Ask for specific feedback; it will come in handy at your next interview.
- Don't hide short stints on your CV: two or three months at a well-known company can be explained in one honest sentence, while a gap raises more questions.
- If you relocated, find out in advance how long you have to find a new job on your current residence permit.

FAQ
How long does probation last in iGaming?
Most often three to six months. In Malta and Cyprus the standard is six months; in Malta, the law allows up to a year for senior and technical roles with a high salary. In Poland, a probationary contract is capped at three months. B2B contractors may formally have no probation, but a short notice period in the first months takes its place.
Can they pay less during probation?
They can, if it's in the contract, but at decent iGaming companies the salary during probation is the same as after it. A gap like “we discussed €3 000, it's €1 800 during probation” is a reason to revisit the offer, or at least get the date and amount of the raise in writing.
Can you be fired during probation without a reason?
In many jurisdictions, yes: in Malta and Cyprus, termination during probation follows a simplified procedure with short notice. That's why it's so important to get the pass criteria in writing and check in with your manager regularly rather than waiting for the final review.
Can you pass probation early?
Yes, if the company does this and you've clearly hit the expected results ahead of schedule. Ask about it in your first week along with the criteria; then ending probation early becomes a clear goal rather than a favor you're asking for.
What should you do if your probation is extended?
Ask which specific criteria weren't met and what you need to do during the extra period, and get it in writing. Check whether your contract and the country's law allow an extension: in Poland, for example, simply extending a probationary contract isn't provided for.
