Pay and freshness

6% of employers publish a salary range, so the SpinHire benchmark in «Roles and salary benchmarks» is the practical guide. New in the last 7 days: 89.

Which roles game development covers

The largest group is platform backend engineers working in Java, Go, C++ and Python. They build wallets, betting engines, supplier and payment integrations. Next to them are frontend and JavaScript game developers, QA engineers, DevOps and solution architects.

Game mathematician is a rare and separate profession. They design the slot model, including paytables, volatility, hit frequency and bonus rounds, and prove the declared RTP holds in practice. The game designer owns mechanics and feel; the mathematician owns the numbers underneath.

At operators and sports companies such as Betsson, engineering looks more like fintech: high load, transactions and real-time odds. Slot studios lean toward graphics, animation and close work with artists.

What the work involves and how it is judged

Backend teams care about stability and latency, because a player must never lose a bet or a win during an outage. They are judged on uptime, incident count, release pace and the quality of third-party integrations.

Slot developer jobs follow a different cycle: prototype, maths model, game build, testing, certification with a lab such as GLI or BMM, then release to operators. Hitting the release plan and passing certification without extra rounds is what counts.

QA in iGaming tests more than the interface. It checks win calculations, behaviour on a dropped connection and round history accuracy. A bug here means a player's money and a regulator complaint.

Tech stack and skills employers want

Browser slots are usually built in JavaScript or TypeScript with WebGL rendering, often through PixiJS. Unity shows up less often, mostly at mobile or social casino studios. Backend roles ask for Java, Go or C++, databases and message queues.

Experience with high-load transactional systems, idempotency and audit trails is valued. Game mathematicians need probability theory, simulations in Python or C++, and the ability to explain a model to a game designer.

How to break in

Engineers from fintech, mobile gaming or e-commerce usually have the easiest path: the problems are familiar, and what is new is the domain and regulatory requirements. Mobile game developers move naturally into slot frontend work.

For mathematicians, a self-made project helps: build a simple slot model and verify its RTP with a simulation. That says more in a portfolio than a degree. Growth leads to tech lead, architect or studio head.

How to spot a good listing

A good listing names the product, the stack, team size and the markets the games ship to. Mentions of certification and regulated jurisdictions are a sign the company has real processes.

Be careful with roles where it is unclear who owns the product or which licence it runs under. In the interview, ask how releases work, who handles incidents at night and whether there is a dedicated QA team.
