Affiliate manager vs media buyer
An affiliate manager works with partners: finding webmasters, streamers, SEO sites and arbitrage teams, agreeing terms and policing traffic quality. Their product is a network of partners who send players.
A media buyer buys traffic directly on ad networks such as Facebook, TikTok, Google, native networks and search arbitrage. They launch campaigns, test creatives and answer for whether the budget pays back.
Around them work gambling SEO specialists, ASO specialists, influencer producers, user acquisition managers and traffic analysts. Larger teams split these roles, while in smaller ones a buyer often handles analytics and creatives too.
How performance is measured
The key metric is FTD, the first deposit, and what it costs. After that come click-to-registration and registration-to-deposit conversion rates, campaign ROI or ROAS, and player quality: whether they return and deposit again.
Affiliate managers are judged on the volume and quality of partner traffic, the number of active partners and the fraud share. The commission model, whether CPA, revenue share or hybrid, changes which partners are worth having.
Skills and tools employers ask for
Buyers need fluency in ad platforms, trackers such as Keitaro or Binom, and an understanding of platform moderation and anti-fraud systems. Being able to test creative and geo hypotheses quickly is highly valued.
Affiliate managers need negotiation skills, knowledge of the partner market and experience with affiliate platforms such as Cellxpert, Income Access or MyAffiliates. Spotting incentivised and fraudulent traffic is part of the job.
Both roles benefit from Excel or Google Sheets, basic analytics and English. Some geos call for local market knowledge, for example Latin America, Africa or Central Asia.
How to start and where to grow
Many people start in arbitrage teams as junior buyers or assistants, often after related verticals such as nutra or e-commerce. Experience managing your own budget and a clear campaign track record count for more than a CV.
Growth leads to buyer team lead, Head of Media Buying or Head of Affiliates. Another path is moving from arbitrage to an operator's in-house team, with less risk but slower approvals.
How to spot a good listing
A good listing says whose traffic budget it is, which sources and geos, how pay is calculated and who makes creatives. If it promises a share of profit without defining profit, get the formula before you start.
Check whether the company works with licensed brands and in which markets. Grey schemes and banned ad accounts damage a buyer's reputation, and in this niche reputation is what matters most.
