Briefly: A DevOps engineer in iGaming keeps the casino and sportsbook platform alive when load multiplies within minutes: a tournament final, a top slot release, a DDoS from a competitor. The stack is standard — Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, Prometheus — but downtime costs more, and the regulator dictates where data lives. A mid-level engineer in Malta and Cyprus earns €4000–5500 a month, remote — €2800–4000. As of 6 October 2026 the SpinHire catalogue has 84 open DevOps vacancies, 24 of them remote.
Sunday, 21:43, the second half of a big derby. Three minutes before a goal, the number of live bets triples; a minute later a wave of junk traffic from tens of thousands of addresses hits the load balancer. Players need their bet slip accepted within a second, or they’ll go to a competitor and never come back. The on-call DevOps engineer isn’t watching football right now: they’re watching the autoscaler add pods to the betting service, checking that CDN filtering has cut the attack, and posting “holding” in the incident channel. In the morning there’ll be a post-mortem. That’s an ordinary evening in a profession iGaming rarely talks about, even though nothing works without it.
What a DevOps engineer does in casino and betting
An online casino or sportsbook is dozens of services: wallet, betting, bonuses, KYC, payments, integrations with hundreds of game providers. DevOps is responsible for where and how all of it runs. A typical set of tasks:
- Clusters and cloud. Kubernetes on AWS or GCP, increasingly in a hybrid with bare metal, Helm charts, networking and load balancing.
- Infrastructure as code. Terraform or Terragrunt, Ansible. A new environment for a new market should spin up from the repository, not by hand.
- CI/CD. Pipelines in GitLab CI, GitHub Actions or Jenkins, ArgoCD for deployment. Releases several times a day with zero downtime.
- Monitoring and on-call. Prometheus, Grafana, ELK or Loki, alerts, on-call rotation, incident reviews.
- Security. DDoS protection, secrets, access control, auditor requirements. In gambling, availability attacks aren’t rare — they’re part of the competition.
Job titles vary: DevOps Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer, Platform Engineer, Systems Engineer, Cloud Engineer. Kaizen Gaming literally writes it with a bar: “Site Reliability | DevOps Engineer”. The difference between DevOps and SRE in iGaming is fuzzy: SRE is more about production reliability and SLOs, DevOps more broadly about automation, but job ads almost always mix the responsibilities.
How DevOps in gambling differs from regular IT
The tools are the same as at any product company, so moving from IT is easier here than into marketing or compliance. The differences lie in the conditions those tools run under.
- Peaks driven by the sports calendar. Load depends on the fixture calendar and evening hours across time zones. You prepare for a Champions League final a week ahead, not on match day.
- The cost of a minute of downtime. A live product that’s down means unsettled bets, complaints to the regulator and players at a competitor. So SLAs are stricter and post-mortems more detailed.
- Regulation. Many jurisdictions require player data to be stored in-country or in the EU, separate environments for different licences, and change logs for auditors. A single product can live in five different cloud regions.
- Integrations. The platform aggregates games from dozens of providers and payments from dozens of PSPs. Someone else’s outage at a provider becomes your incident too.
If you’re coming from regular software development, it’s worth reading the breakdown of moving from IT into iGaming: it covers money, risks and what the industry looks like from the inside.
DevOps engineer salary in iGaming
The benchmark is the profession card in the SpinHire catalogue. Figures in euros, gross per month.
| Level | Malta and Cyprus | Poland, Romania, Baltics | Remote |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior | €2500–3300 | €1900–2600 | €1500–2200 |
| Mid-level | €4000–5500 | €3200–4400 | €2800–4000 |
| Senior | €6000–8000 | €4800–6500 | €4300–6000 |
| Lead | €8500–12 000 | €7000–9500 | €6300–8500 |
This is the level of a platform backend developer: a mid-level there also earns €4000–5500 in Malta, a senior €6000–8000. Only data engineers are slightly higher, with €4200–5800 at mid-level. A system administrator without Kubernetes and cloud earns €2500–3400 in Malta — almost one and a half times less than DevOps, and that’s the main incentive for sysadmins to retrain. Most income is base salary; on top there can be on-call pay, an annual bonus and stock options at product companies. You can estimate your own figure for your city and grade in the salary calculator.
About ranges in job ads. Of the 84 DevOps vacancies in the catalogue as of 6 October, only one listed pay: a remote Principal DevOps Engineer at $9000–9500 a month. Other employers only name the money at interview, so before the first call it helps to know the market range and not name a figure first. How to do that is covered in the article on negotiating an offer.
DevOps jobs in iGaming: who’s hiring now
As of 6 October 2026 the SpinHire catalogue has 84 open vacancies for the DevOps query. Betsson Group has the most roles — 8, in Malta, Tbilisi, Athens and Málaga, including dedicated wallet and payments teams. Playtech has 6 vacancies in Sofia, Kyiv and São Paulo, Kaizen Gaming and its Betano brand 6 in Athens and Thessaloniki, SOFTSWISS 5 in Warsaw, Tbilisi and Malta. EGT Digital is hiring 4 people in Bulgaria, from Junior DevOps to DevOps Architect.
| Catalogue snapshot as of 6.10.2026 | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| Total for the DevOps query | 84 |
| Office | 57 |
| Remote | 24 |
| Hybrid | 3 |
| Senior, principal, staff in the title | 35 |
| Lead, head, architect, manager | 8 |
| Junior in the title | 2 |
The table shows two things. First, the market wants experience: for two junior vacancies there are 43 senior and leadership positions. Second, there’s less remote work than people tend to assume for DevOps — under a third. Licensed operators more often keep infrastructure teams in offices in Malta, Athens, Sofia and Warsaw. English is mentioned in 80 of 84 vacancies, Russian in 7, usually at B2B platforms and teams with Russian-speaking developers. A roundup of remote roles across all fields is in the article about remote work in iGaming.
How to become a DevOps engineer in iGaming
Companies almost never hire without experience here: two junior vacancies across the whole catalogue speak for themselves. There are three realistic ways in.
- From system administration. The most common path. You need to pick up Kubernetes, Terraform and cloud to the point where you can stand up a service from scratch and describe it in code.
- From backend development. A developer who set up the pipelines and deployment for their own service is already half DevOps. iGaming hires them willingly because they understand what breaks for the dev team.
- From DevOps in another industry. An almost lossless move: fintech and high-load e-commerce are especially valued, and the industry specifics are picked up within a couple of months.
At interview you’ll be asked about a real incident: what went down, how you found the cause, what you changed afterwards. You may be asked to design infrastructure for peak load or review someone else’s Terraform. They expect 2–3 years of hands-on experience with Kubernetes and cloud, scripting in Bash, Python or Go, and technical English from B2. Put numbers in your CV: uptime, recovery time, how much you saved on cloud. How to frame your experience for the industry is covered in the guide to CVs for iGaming.
Schedule and on-call
Officially a five-day week, but almost every team has an on-call rotation: a week on duty every month or month and a half, usually with extra pay. The busiest hours are evenings and weekends when sport is on, so many companies have a rule against Friday evening releases. The main personal quality they look for is staying calm during an outage and the habit of writing documentation afterwards instead of forgetting about it.
Where you go next
The ladder is standard: Senior DevOps or SRE, then DevOps Team Lead, Head of Infrastructure and on to CTO. iGaming has side branches: the platform team at a B2B provider, where one infrastructure serves hundreds of operator clients, or security, where experience with DDoS protection and audits is highly valued. Demand is steady: operators with their own platform, B2B platforms, game providers and betting services are constantly looking for engineers.
