In short: Malta currently has 348 live iGaming vacancies, 93% of them office-based. A mid-level specialist in development or compliance earns €4,000–5,500 gross a month; after tax and social contributions about €3,000–4,100 is left. Income tax is progressive, up to 35%, but a flat 15% rate applies to executives at MGA licensees. A one-bedroom flat in Sliema eats up €1,100–1,600.
We have already written about moving to Malta: the visa, the flat hunt and the relocation package are covered in the relocation guide, and the overall industry salary table is in the 2026 review. This article is about something else: the arithmetic. What a specific role pays on the island, how much of that the state takes, what living there costs and what is finally left compared with Limassol and Warsaw. Plus a list of companies hiring right now, from our database.
Why Malta remains the capital of the industry
Malta was the first in the EU, back in 2004, to build full regulation of online gambling, and ever since a Malta Gaming Authority licence has been treated as a pass to European markets. Operators and providers keep headquarters here, not representative offices, and the regulator requires a number of functions (compliance, AML, MLRO) to sit physically on the island. Hence the shape of demand.
As of 8 September 2026 the SpinHire database holds 348 vacancies in Malta. That is the third-largest figure after remote roles and vacancies with no country stated, and more than the USA (280) or the UK (268). By area: casino operations 84, game and platform development 50, management positions 49, compliance and AML 47, finance, legal and HR 34, marketing and CRM 30, player support 25. The work format leaves almost no choice: 323 positions are office-based, 18 hybrid and only 7 fully remote. If you are looking for remote work, Malta is not your market.
What roles pay in Malta
Below are the benchmarks from SpinHire profession database: mid-level, gross per month, for Malta and Cyprus, where the ranges practically coincide. The right-hand column is what employers themselves wrote in live Maltese ads today. Only 53 ads out of 348 state a salary, so there are not many examples — but they are real.
| Role | Benchmark, gross per month (mid) | Per year | What Maltese job ads say right now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support Agent | €2 100–2 800 | €25–34k | bet365: adviser with Finnish, Danish, German or Dutch €35,600 a year; JobMatchingPartner: support for the Swedish market €25–28k |

| COO | €12 000–16 000 | €144–192k | No ranges stated |
Two corrections to the table. First: language support in Malta pays above the “base” range, because operators keep teams here for the Scandinavian, German and Dutch markets, and bet365's €35,600 for a role with no industry experience is not an exception but the norm for a rare language. Second: Maltese employers tend to quote salary per year rather than per month, and often add a relocation bonus, health insurance and a gym membership. When comparing offers, convert everything into annual gross, otherwise it is easy to get it wrong.
Taxes: the scale, the classes and 15% for executives
Income tax in Malta is progressive, and the rates depend on your “tax class”: single, married and parent. The classes differ in the size of the tax-free allowance and in where the brackets start. For an employee the tax is withheld by the employer through the FSS system, and the annual return usually arrives already filled in. Below is the single scale for the base year 2025; check the current year's thresholds on the Commissioner for Revenue's site (cfr.gov.mt), as they are indexed in almost every budget.
| Annual income (single) | Rate | Married (benchmark) | Parent (benchmark) |
|---|---|---|---|
| up to €12,000 | 0% | up to €15,000 | up to €13,000 |
| €12 001–16 000 | 15% | €15 001–23 000 | €13 001–17 500 |
| €16 001–60 000 | 25% | €23 001–60 000 | €17 501–60 000 |
| over €60,000 | 35% | over €60,000 | over €60,000 |
Social contributions. An employee pays a class 1 contribution of 10% of salary, and the employer adds another 10% on top. An important detail: the contribution is capped per week — for those born after 1961 that is about €55 a week (2025 benchmark), roughly €2,900 a year. So for any salary above €29,000 a year the effective contribution rate falls below 10%, and for an executive on €100,000 it is barely noticeable. In exchange you get access to public healthcare and pension credit.
Highly Qualified Persons Rules. Malta's main tax argument for iGaming executives. If you hold one of the management positions listed in the rules at a company with an MGA licence (CEO, CFO, CTO, COO, Head of Marketing, Chief Risk Officer, Head of Compliance, MLRO and a number of others), your employment income is taxed at a flat 15% instead of the progressive scale. The conditions: a minimum annual income (the threshold is around €100,000, indexed, as a benchmark), an employment contract with a licensee, and no Maltese residence before that. The relief is granted for several years with the option to extend, and the terms differ for EU and non-EU citizens. Applications for the gaming status are assessed by the MGA itself, so HR at a licensed operator normally knows the procedure by heart. For a mid-level specialist HQP does not work: no position from the list and no income threshold.
A few more points, briefly. You become a tax resident after 183 days on the island. A newcomer without Maltese domicile pays tax on foreign income only if he remits it to Malta (with foreign income above €35,000 a year there is a minimum tax of €5,000, as a benchmark). There are no municipal taxes, and VAT is 18%.
What is left in hand
We calculate for a single person on the scale above, with contributions taken at the cap of about €2,900 a year. The figures are rounded — this is a model, not your accountant's calculation. But it shows the order of magnitude accurately.
| Role and gross | Income tax per year | Social contributions | Net per year | Net per month | Share taken home |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Support agent, €30,000 (€2,500/mo) | €4 100 | €2 900 | €23 000 | ≈ €1 920 | 77% |
| Backend or compliance, €48,000 (€4,000/mo) | €8 600 | €2 900 | €36 500 | ≈ €3 040 | 76% |
| Product or Head of Affiliates, €72,000 (€6,000/mo) | €15 800 | €2 900 | €53 300 | ≈ €4 440 | 74% |
| Head of Marketing, €100,000, standard scale | €25 600 | €2 900 | €71 500 | ≈ €5 960 | 72% |
| Head of Marketing, €100,000, on HQP 15% | €15 000 | €2 900 | €82 100 | ≈ €6 840 | 82% |
Note two things. First: thanks to the cap on contributions, the share you take home in Malta barely falls as the salary rises towards €60,000, and only after that does the 35% kick in. Second: at the €100,000 level HQP adds about €10,000 net a year.
The real cost of living in 2026
Malta stopped being a cheap island long ago, and the main expense here is rent. All the figures below are benchmarks for autumn 2026 for a person without a car; the spread depends on the district and the state of the flat.
- Rent. A one-bedroom flat in Sliema, St Julian's or Gzira is €1,100–1,600 a month. The same square metres in Msida, Birkirkara or Mosta cost €850–1,200. A room in a shared flat is €500–750. The deposit is usually one month plus an agency fee of half a month.
- Utilities. Electricity and water on the ARMS bill €70–130 depending on the season (air conditioning in summer and a heater in winter move the total noticeably), internet €25–40.
- Food. Groceries for one €350–500 a month, lunch at a café near the office €12–18, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant €60–90.
- Transport. Public transport with Tallinja has been free for residents with a personal card since October 2022. A taxi around the central cluster (Sliema, St Julian's, Valletta) is €8–15. Your own car on the island is more of a burden: parking and traffic jams.
- Healthcare and the rest. Public healthcare is available to those paying social contributions, private insurance is €50–120 a month and is often provided by the employer. A gym is €40–70, and the ferry to Gozo for the weekend is under €5.
All in, a single person renting a one-bedroom flat in Sliema and living without a car spends €1,900–2,500 a month (benchmark). For a support agent on €1,920 net that means a shared flat or a place away from the sea; for a mid-level specialist on €3,000+ it means a comfortable life and €600–1,100 put aside every month.
Malta, Limassol or Warsaw: one table
We take the same gross of €48,000 a year (a mid-level backend developer or compliance manager) and calculate for a single person with no family. We went through the neighbours' rates in detail in the article “Limassol versus Warsaw”, here only the bottom line. All amounts are benchmarks, rounded to the nearest ten.
| Parameter | Malta (Sliema) | Cyprus (Limassol) | Poland (Warsaw) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Income tax | 0 / 15 / 25 / 35%, tax-free allowance €12,000 | 0 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 35%, tax-free allowance €19,500 | 12 / 32%, tax-free allowance PLN 30,000, the 32% threshold at PLN 120,000 |
| Employee social contributions | 10% capped at about €2,900 a year | 8.8% social insurance + 2.65% GESY, capped | 13.71% ZUS + 9% health contribution, no cap on the health part |
| Relief for newcomers | HQP 15% for executives at MGA licensees from a threshold of about €100k | 50% of income exempt on salaries above €55,000 (for new residents, for up to 17 years) | In IT, a B2B contract with simplified taxation instead of employment is common |
| Net from €48,000 gross | ≈ €3,040 a month | ≈ €2,950–3,050 a month | ≈ €2,500–2,650 a month (on an employment contract) |
| Rent for a one-bedroom flat in a good district | €1 100–1 600 | €1 300–1 900 | €800–1 100 (3 500–4 800 PLN) |
| Left after rent | ≈ €1 550–1 900 | ≈ €1 150–1 700 | ≈ €1 500–1 800 |
| iGaming vacancies in the database today | 348 | 72 | 116 (all of Poland) |
| What matters to know | Almost everything is office-based, rent is expensive, English is an official language | More Russian-speaking teams, hot summers, rent rising faster than salaries | The cheapest living of the three, but the gross for the same role is usually lower too |
The conclusion surprises many: on a mid-level salary Malta does not lose to Cyprus on take-home pay, and on the number of open positions it is ahead by almost five times. Cyprus takes the lead above €55,000 thanks to the 50% relief and its Russian-speaking environment. Warsaw is cheaper, but in euro the same role pays less there, so a table with identical gross flatters it.
Who is hiring in Malta right now
The list is by number of open vacancies in Malta in the SpinHire database as of 8 September 2026. The figures change daily, but the pecking order holds for months.
- Betsson Group: around 100 positions, the island's largest employer in our database, from development to finance.
- JobMatchingPartner (recruitment agency): 43 vacancies, mostly finance, legal, compliance and support; one of the few agencies that publishes salary ranges.
- Altenar: 28 positions, a sports platform provider, plenty of development and QA.
- Kaizen Gaming (Betano): 27 positions in total under three names, the operator is expanding its Maltese hub fast.
- ComeOn Group: 22 positions, an operator headquartered in Malta.
- VanKaizen (agency): 13 positions.
- Enteractive: 12 positions, many roles with languages.
- bet365: 12 positions, including language support with a salary of €35,600 stated in the ad.
- Gamdon: 10 positions.
- Pragmatic Play: 9, EveryMatrix: 7, SkillOnNet: 7, Betclic Group: 6, Relax Gaming: 5, Rhino Entertainment: 5, Eeze: 5, Casumo: 3, Rush Street Interactive: 3, Kindred Group: 2, Light & Wonder: 2, Aristocrat: 2, one each at Kambi, Playtech, Catena Media, GR8 Tech and Kingmakers.
Four of the first ten lines are agencies (JobMatchingPartner, VanKaizen, Heroix and Xtech HR). For Malta that is the norm: operators outsource recruitment, and agencies disclose salaries more often. The full list with filters by area: jobs in Malta.
How to look for a job in Malta
- Start with the roles that physically need the island. Compliance, AML, MLRO, finance, casino operations, language support: here the employer is prepared for relocation in advance and more often pays for the move. Development and marketing are hired into the office too, but more readily from people already in the EU.
- Count an offer in annual net, not monthly gross. Take the scale from this article, subtract the contributions and compare with the rent in the district where you will actually live. €40,000 in Malta and €40,000 in Warsaw are different money.
- Ask about the relocation package separately. The norm for a mid-level hire: the flight, 2–4 weeks of temporary accommodation, help with the Single Permit or with registration for EU citizens, sometimes a settling-in bonus of €1,000–3,000. For what else goes into it and how to negotiate, read the guide to moving.
- Non-EU citizens: look at the Key Employee Initiative. From a salary of €30,000 a year the employer can obtain a permit through the fast-track procedure at Identità, usually a week or two instead of several months. Most of the roles in the table above clear the threshold.
- Check the licence. The register of licensees at mga.org.mt is public. A company that is not there, either in its own name or through a parent structure, is worth asking questions about.
- Keep two or three agencies close. A noticeable share of hiring in finance and compliance goes through them, and they have salary figures even before the interview.
The downsides that get talked about less
The island is small: 316 square kilometres and more than half a million residents, one of the highest densities in the world. Construction everywhere, and the morning jams between Sliema and St Julian's eat half an hour for three kilometres. Rent has grown faster than salaries in recent years, and the quality of older housing often does not match the price: damp in winter and no heating are a reality, not a tall tale. Summers are hot and humid, and in winter flats are colder than the street. There is a Russian-speaking community, but it is noticeably smaller than the Cypriot one. And the main thing: the job market here is narrow by industry. If in three years you decide to leave iGaming, the choice of employers on the island will turn out to be short, and that is worth building into your plan in advance.
FAQ
What income tax does an iGaming specialist pay in Malta?
A progressive scale: 0% up to €12,000, 15% up to €16,000, 25% up to €60,000 and 35% above that for a single person (the base 2025 scale, thresholds are indexed). Plus a social contribution of 10% capped at about €2,900 a year. On a salary of €48,000 roughly €36,500 a year is left in hand.
Who qualifies for the 15% rate under the Highly Qualified Persons Rules?
Executives of companies with an MGA licence in positions from the approved list (CEO, CFO, CTO, COO, Head of Marketing, MLRO, Head of Compliance and others) with an annual income above a threshold of around €100,000. For mid-level specialists the relief does not work.
How much is left in hand from €4,000 gross a month in Malta?
About €3,040 a month for a single person: €8,600 of tax and roughly €2,900 of contributions a year on €48,000. After rent for a one-bedroom flat in Sliema at €1,100–1,600, that leaves €1,550–1,900 for everything else.
Is a support salary enough to live on in Malta?
On a basic €2,100–2,800 gross you take home €1,700–2,000, which covers a room in a shared flat or a place away from the sea, with nothing saved. With a rare language (Scandinavian, German, Dutch) the range rises to €35,600 a year, and life becomes noticeably easier.
Where is more left over: Malta or Cyprus?
On a mid-level salary up to €55,000 it is roughly the same, and with cheaper rent Malta wins slightly. Above €55,000 Cyprus pulls ahead thanks to the 50% relief for new residents, unless you are an executive entitled to Malta's 15% under HQP.
